a+LiNK Architecture Inc. is an architecture firm providing architectural, interior design, heritage consulting, and master planning services to clients throughout southwestern Ontario. In 1998, founding partners, Stephen Mawdsley and Ed van der Maarel formed a partnership and established SJMA to provide architectural, project management, and construction management services for small to medium size commercial and institutional projects. The firm continued to pursue the specialized area of heritage restoration and adaptive reuse projects to complement its growth in the areas of complex renovations and contemporary places of worship.

In 2014, the firm was rebranded as a+LiNK Architecture Inc., recognizing the firm’s connection of architectural work to preserve + create + sustain. The ‘+LiNK’ represents the symbolic connection to characterize the intention of linking people together through architecture and design. The firm has won a number of awards and continues to provide creative solutions that aim to enhance our communities and enrich our culture through a collaborative approach with our clients. The firm provides a full range of architectural services for municipal, provincial, not-for-profit and other community-based organizations.

The firm’s motto of ‘preserve + create + sustain’, also shows our commitment to sustainable design. Not just by incorporating principles from green building rating systems – LEED, GreenGlobes, Passive House or Net Zero, but also in the adaptive reuse of buildings.  This is an effective way to maintain the embodied energy of existing buildings while implementing energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gases.

In 2021, a+LiNK expanded the firm’s partnership to welcome Architect, Mike Holt, Interior Designer, Melinda Main, and Technologist, Andrew Simek. With an interdisciplinary leadership team, a+LiNK continues to offer exceptional and comprehensive architectural and design services for our local communities.
